Communicating by Email

To be honest I am not a big user of email, preferring to text as it is more reliable for my friends and I as far as getting a quick answer etc. I do utilize email for sending photos and I really like the way forms etc can be sent to you instantly for applications and such. I really don't send or receive enough emails to worry about having everything organized but have tried out alot of the suggested options and quite like having a few folders set up to separate official and friend/family emails, so have learnt something useful there.
We were asked to find what information about a users email, the origin of the message, the path it took, could be found in an email message.


The information below can be found for each email you receive. This is the info for a message sent to me from curtin uni for this unit. As you can see it contains the the info of where the message came from its destination (my email provider) what filters etc it went to, and the date and time, subject etc. Useful if you want to be sure exactly where a message came from before opening any attachments.

Happy Australia Day- time to play catch up !

Sorry, been MIA for 4 weeks , usual story xmas (went on holidays) work (to much)and Internet connection dramas (hungry mouse ate the phone cord)then a week at the inlaws helping them spring clean and now finally all is back to normal, I hope? Have spent a couple of days catching up on the module work and working on our concepts assignment now I will try and update this blog accordingly, over the next coupla days.

Traceroute

Ok! This task required us to trace the route from a chosen website such as
http://centralops.net/com/
or http://network-tools.com/ to curtin.edu.au and record the amount of hops taken, etc. Went to centralops first and didn't have much success, kept getting to hop 17 then 18-21 says "timed out" then "trace aborted". Switched sites to network-tools- trace gets to 17, then 18-20 show * * * only then hop 21 shows the IP address of Curtin which is 134.7.179.53. Went back to centralops, I couldn't get a route without any * * * tried many times and with different browsers. Has this got anything to do with the fact that I am using dial-up? Anyway, pasted below is my final attempt- total of 21 hops if you count the * hops, at an average of 253 ms.

OK! This seems to appear abit messy, but all the info is still there!! Had a look around the centralops sight bookmarked it for later use, I think the domain name search will come in handy sometime, had to google alot of the other options though as I had no idea what they meant "and now I do, sorta!".

FTP (File Transfer Protocol)

These days FTP is used mainly for transferring, maintaining or changing websites. I had not used FTP until this task. After reading the discussion postings on this task I was feeling abit intimidated as problems seemed to be experienced by other students. I downloaded FileZilla, and then read the Quick Introduction to FTP before attempting the task, which was recall curtin.edu.au. Anyway, long story short- typed in the URL, connected, found the required read me file, downloaded, opened and found the answer to the ? which is "CAPITALIZATION" matters. That went alot smoother than expected, cool. Decided I'll keep FileZilla for latter applications to do with other units or for my personal use.

Playin' Catch-up ! Todays the day!

Ok! totally ignored my tip for "little-alot rather than lots-later" Going for lots later this week. Today's catch-up day.

Patience plus! This was a really good example of what can be achieved with simple text, go star wars! My 15 yr old son kindly pointed out that, thats what computer animation looked like when I was a kid, Not quite true but pac man & space invaders really kicked ...! :)

Using Telnet- Library database access

Actually completed this task on Monday night but didn't have time to update until now, needed elsewhere.
Anyway, read some of the other students advice, and as I run Vista went to the Telnet Help page, read, followed instructions. Went and made a cuppa while installation of Telnet Client (dial-up) proceeded. Opened telnet then typed (?) as suggested to view commands. Couldn't seem to locate a way of going back to an empty screen, so close and open and away again, wrote the commands down so as to be able to use them! memories not that good. Took a few goes before I worked out that you have to put the command prompt o (open) before not after the address. OK off to Deakin Library database. ? What kind of terminal are you using- thats a very good question, went with W>NCSAVT100
must of been the right answer!! New window, you may search for library material by any of the following (bunch of new commands)Chose by Author typed in Bannahum (required author) Search came up with 2 authors by that name. More new commands selected Print as instructed, new options chose email typed in email address. then nothing seemed to happen no confirmation etc. Decided to assume that I had completed the task effectively and went to sleep.

Checked email Wednesday and here it is, Task successfully completed. Telnet was a very simple and effective way to obtain this information, but not at all visually appealing or stimulating, nothing to click :)lol

Top 5 Blog Tips 4 Beginners

• Could be pushin'  it to come up with 5, but here goes.. Firstly, keep things simple at first everything can be adjusted anytime, well so it appears.  Find a layout, make some settings and go for it.
• Don't get hung up on knowing how everything works,right NOW, just go with the flow, learn as you blog.
• Try to write little often, rather than lots latter.
• I imagine you should try to make your blog posts as interesting as possible, otherwise no one will  read them.  Still good for a self-help journal in any case!
